Do something different with your BBQ ideas this year

 

As Brits, when the weather heats up, we start itching to fire up our barbeques and get cooking! So, what do you fancy? Burgers? Boring! Sausages? Overdone! Limp salad? Unappealing! Read on to discover a few ways to spice up your barbeque game this summer.

First up, speedy kebabs. Simply spear chicken fillets with wooden skewers to create instant kebabs. You can add any veg you like or pair with chorizo for a spicier treat. Top tip: soak the wooden skewers in water overnight to stop them burning when you place them on the BBQ.

Fish is a great option for the BBQ and offers a lighter alternative to meat. Slice a lemon and place on the grill before laying the fish on top to stop the fish from sticking. An added bonus is the delicious lemon flavour will infuse into the fish.

Play around with flavour and texture combinations to spice up your salad offering. Adding chorizo or nduja to a potato salad packs a punch and is a great way to offer a more filling side-dish. Watermelon and feta is a classic combination – the vibrant colours will pop when served al fresco. Why not cook rice in advance and add spices to make it more interesting – you could try stirring through a tbsp of cumin and some diced butternut squash.

Barbequing doesn’t mean dessert should be forgotten. Banana S’mores are popular with children and adults alike. Peel the banana and split almost in half lengthways. Take a square of foil and draw up around the sides of the banana. With the small gap left, fill your banana with a topping of your choice. You could use chocolate buttons, marshmallows or even other fruits. As soon as the coals from your BBQ have died down, place the wrapped bananas on top. Close the lid and enjoy when gooey and molten.  Another option to try is brownies. Pour your brownie mixture into an ovenproof dish. Close the lid on your BBQ and check after around 10 minutes to see how they’re doing. Remove when cooked but are at the gooeyness of your choosing!

When the cooking is finished and the clean-up should really begin, reach not for the anti-bac but for an onion! Cut in half and clean your grill with ease. Happy barbequing!
